This policy explains what personal information we collect, why we collect it, how we use and protect it, who we share it with, and the rights you have under POPIA. It applies to donors, supporters, website visitors, volunteers and anyone else whose personal information we process.
Depending on how you interact with us, we may collect:
We collect personal information directly from you (when you donate, contact us, or complete a form), automatically through our website and cookies, and from our payment providers when you make a donation through them.

We process personal information where it is necessary to conclude or carry out a transaction with you (such as a donation), to comply with a legal obligation, to pursue our legitimate interests as a conservation organisation in a way that does not override your rights, or where you have given consent (for example, to receive newsletters). Some of our service or payment providers (for example PayPal) may process information outside South Africa. Where personal information is transferred across borders, we take reasonable steps to ensure it is protected in line with POPIA.
If you are located in the European Union, the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, the EU or UK General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) may also apply to our processing of your personal information. Where it does, we rely on an appropriate lawful basis (such as your consent, the performance of your donation, or our legitimate interests), we honour the rights the GDPR provides (including access, rectification, erasure, restriction, portability and objection), and you may also lodge a complaint with your local data-protection authority. We take reasonable technical and organisational measures to safeguard personal information against loss, unauthorised access, and misuse. While no online transmission can be guaranteed to be completely secure, we work to protect your information and to keep our security measures under review.
We keep personal information only for as long as necessary for the purposes set out above. Donation and tax records (including Section 18A documentation) are kept for at least five years, as required by South African tax law. Other information is kept for as long as needed to manage our relationship with you or to meet legal obligations, after which it is securely deleted or de-identified.

This website is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect the personal information of a child (a person under 18) without the consent of a parent or guardian. If you believe we hold a child’s information without proper consent, please contact us and we will delete it.
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The current version, with its effective date, will always be available on this website.

Cookies are small text files placed on your device when you visit a website. Similar technologies (such as your browser’s local storage) work in much the same way. They can be used to make a site work, to remember your choices, or to understand how a site is used.
Our website itself does not set any tracking, analytics or advertising cookies. Because the site is served through Cloudflare (a security and performance layer), strictly-necessary cookies may be set to keep the site secure and working — these are exempt from consent and are not used to track you.
When you make a donation, our payment providers (for example PayFast, Yoco, BackaBuddy and PayPal) run their own secure checkout pages and may set their own cookies there. Those cookies are governed by each provider’s own privacy and cookie policies, and are outside our control.
Should we introduce website analytics or similar tools, we will only enable non-essential cookies with your consent — for example through a consent banner we would add at that time — and we will update this notice first.
Because we don’t set non-essential cookies, there is nothing to opt out of. You can still block or delete cookies — including third-party and security cookies — at any time through your browser settings.
